Green Mark scheme expanded to retail outlets, supermarkets

Retail outlets and supermarkets now have more incentive to put in place green technology and eco-friendly features.
They can apply to be formally recognised for their efforts, under the Green Mark Scheme, spearheaded by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).
The two sectors are the latest to be added to BCA’s Green Mark scheme, bringing the total to 14.
Others include schemes for residential buildings, data centres and restaurants.
The scheme recognises best practices for environmentally friendly buildings and interiors.
Acting Manpower Minister and Senior Minister of State for National Development, Tan Chuan-Jin, announced this on Thursday when he launched BCA’s second series of green building exhibitions in Choa Chu Kang.
The roving exhibition, featuring designs and tips on creating an eco-friendly living environment, will be brought to seven locations over the next two years.
Mr Tan said retail and supermarket outlets which operate with more energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration system can enjoy significantly savings, as the systems account for about half of their energy consumption.
Four supermarkets and three retail outlets are among the first to attain the mark for their green efforts.
They include a ‘FairPrice Finest’ outlet in Serangoon Gardens (which received a Green Mark Gold Plus award), and J’s Salon in ITE College East.
J’s Salon also received the Green Mark Gold Plus award.
