Oxymoron Reports about Singapore (We Green or Not?)

May 10, 2010

We got contradicting report in the span of 6 months. One in Dec 2009 saying we are the Greenest on Earth. And another about us as the No.1 Environmental Degredation just couple days back.

If you read the EurekAlert report carefully, the research done in the University of Adelaide measures environmental impact against total resource availability. Singapore being devoid of any natural resoruces is an energy sink and natural resource blackhole. There are two important rules to a sustainable economy: 1) Use non-renewable resources at a rate no faster than we can find renewable substitutes. 2) Extract renewable resources at a rate no faster than they can be regenerated. Which of these two rules do we abide by? The answer is none. The CNNGO article makes Singapore look good on the surface, but if you study the situation carefully, we are in reality among the 10 worst environmental performers according to the proportional environmental impact index. The phrase “sustainable growth” as used by the Singapore government is in itself oxymoronic – nothing grows forever.
