Did you know? Part 2

March 16, 2010

Did you know that we have a Singapore Green Building Council?

An industry-led initiative

The mission of the SGBC will be to propel the Singapore building and construction industry towards environmental sustainability by promoting green building design, practices and technologies, the integration of green building initiatives into mainstream design, construction and operation of buildings as well as building capability and professionalism to support wider adoption of green building development and practices in Singapore. Its work will complement and support the government’s efforts to accelerate the greening of our buildings by 2030. At the same time we will be able to share our knowledge with other countries in our climatic zone.

Key Focus Areas

Profile Singapore as a leading Sustainable Hub in the tropics   Enhance Professionalism and Knowledge in Sustainable Development   Dedicated Certification Body for Green Building-related Products and Services

Interestingly, the SGBC’s logo is of particular significance too!

The Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) logo is a simple design of two young green leaves, appearing to germinate from text. The two leaves represent the public and private stakeholders in Singapore’s sustainable development programmes; when viewed together, they represent a synthesis of interests on a single stem – the commitment of Singapore to do its part to conserve the environment.

The green-and-grey colour scheme symbolises the Green Movement (of which the SGBC is part) and the industry’s practical approach to green buildings respectively. The border-free and pot-like layout of the logo also symbolises a culture of continual growth and openness of the Council.

For more information, do check out the SGBC’s website and download their Strategic Plan. They have also recently published an Urban Solutions Fact Sheet under the EDB which you guys may want to check out!

Great effort! Now if only the certification of Green building awards should be handed over to SGBC instead of being handed out by BCA. Or perhaps ensure greater coordination amongst the two!
